Course Agenda

9:45
Arrive for tea, coffee and a tasty bite to start the day
10:00
What is Permaculture

Overview of permaculture and forest gardening principles: key differences to 'traditional' gardening techniques; how we have used them at HbN; discussion of how to use them to suit you and your needs; maximising productivity while minimising labour; maintaining a healthy soil; encouraging wildlife.

10:45
Head Outside

Tour around the kitchen garden to demonstrate these principles in action & in development. Have a look at the plants we are using: discuss their uses, cultivation, needs, and even plant some yourself! Hands-on experience of building a healthy soil, plant care or cultivation.

13:00
Lunch

Enjoy a delicious home-made lunch including, depending on the season, produce from the garden.

14:00
Designing Your Space

Using what we have learned in the morning session, Beca will show you how to design a Forest garden to suit your needs. You will need to bring the rough dimensions and aspect of the area you would like to use. If you don’t yet have an area, we can design an ideal. You will produce a scale plan to take home with you.

15:00
Plants

Discuss & take a closer look at some more plants; their uses & needs according to what you would like in your own garden, finding the best place for them in your design and drawing up a 'wish list' for you to make a start as soon as you get home. Beca will also show you how to obtain & cultivate these plants so you don’t have to spend a fortune on plants, with guidance on stratification & sowing of seeds; pruning; taking cuttings & rootstocks/grafting.

16:30
Course Closes

We’ll finish the day with a cup of tea, some well deserved treats and the opportunity to ask any further questions.
